Now if they can get that fare from United, which surely must include a little fee to make it profitable for the search site, surely United could, and would prefer, to offer me that same fare directly?
Some sites buy a guaranteed quantity, this does give them greater purchasing power. Occasionally they also have greater restrictions on cancellations/changes/... Get a copy of the fare rules to understood the purchase.
