Are all of the flights on UA metal? sometimes if there are mulitple airlines involved the fares can be lower.
The only other thing i can think of is that those sites buy the tickets way in advance and re sell them.
To be specific, I can get a direct United fare on a multiple search site from PDX to LHR for $955 all in while the best I seem to be able to do for the same dates in September next year on the United site itself is nearly $200 over that.
But I guess those fares could change tomorrow or in an hour. But it just doesn't seem to make much sense.
But then again, we're talking about airlines...
