My newly wed wife and I went on our vacation in August on United. I used miles to go CID-ORD-LHR-DUB and the return CDG-YYZ-ORD-CID. The United repersentative put that we were honeymooners in my PNR. While at the airport -- I talked to the agent, and she upgraded us for free.
When we got to CDG, we were already upgraded on Air Canada back to the states. Very strange, but very much appreciated. My advice, nothing to lose if you try for the upgrade.
