My view is that for arrivals you want a right hand side seat (ie an F seat in a 737), and for departures you want a left hand side seat (or an A seat).

On the way down from AKL the F seats give you mostly a nice view of the Tasman sea, though it it is clear about halfway through the flight you will often see Mt Taranaki beneath you.
A seats from AKL - WLG give you potential views of the central plateau volcanoes, but again, only if it's clear.
