Well, if I am wrong please correct me, but my understanding is the following: If you have 0 points in your account and starwood wants to deduct points (6 months later) nothing else will happen, apart from the fact that you then have to pay the negative starwood balance off.
So the only negative drawback is that you can not use the next ie 20,000 points for yourself, because starwood will deduct those points immediately.
Any objections?

For the OP's situation, I would not advise now until the OP send me a PM with his account details and I conduct an investigation to review further. I also understand that the member has called up to feedback on this. Do let me know the response if possible.
However, points would definitely be deducted if you have approved the redemption for a free night stay, regardless of how long it takes to do so. But, whether a courtesy note should be sent in this case, I would have to review further.
