Sounds liek the Cook Strait cable in NZ. Originally used as a means to pump electricity generated in the South Island to the more populous North Island. In more recent years a lot of the time electricity flows in the other direction as most new generation has been in the North Island.
I believe in both cases it has more to do with the lack of water in the hydro lakes rather than the increased electricity consumption. I could not believe how dry Tasmania was when I was there last month. Victoria, when did they build the "Great Wall of Victoria" across those desert valleys?
