Re the liquids, it still makes no sense. They weren't looking for any other liquids (or, for that matter, doing thorough bag searches). Nothing but drink bottles were sitting on the search table -- I could easily have had a more than 3 ounce bottle of shampoo and they'd never have seen it. For that matter, if I'd hidden my water bottle more carefully (and had I known about this nonsense, I would have) they'd never have found that either.
Why don't they just enforce the "ban" at the checkpoint, and then allow you to buy water inside the secure area to take on board, as they do nearly everywhere else?
And naturally, the shops in the "secure" area don't tell you you can't bring the water they sell onboard.
