On March 13, I went SFO->SYD and was upgraded from the waitlist on the day of the flight. On March 20, I returned and was upgraded the day before the flight. I am 1K and was on a V fare.

I used to get the upgrades earlier (I travel to SYD often). I wonder if more C seats are being held back for late sales.
