I do this as well...and it is a great way to remember to take the items when you leave the checkpoint! If I don't have a jacket, everything goes in my briefcase.

To the TSA folks - I see a lot of these "checkpoint friendly" laptop bags being advertised. Will these make our lives easier or will you still want the laptop out of the bag???
