I agree with YQL-2B. I also live in a non-hub city and that makes my points more valuable (to me), since purchasing flights (from any carrier) are somewhat more expensive. I don't need 15k short-haul flights, but I like to vacation in Florida using 25k flights.
So if I valued points at $0.01 an MCO ticket costs 25k * $0.01 = $250 + $100 or so in fees = $350. I usually get quotes around $650, so for me AP pts are worth closer to $0.02.
Want to make your AP pts more valuable? Move to a non-hub airport!
