Seat reservations are generally released 10-12 weeks ahead of travel.

If you're seeing no Advance availability at the moment, it's possible Virgin are awaiting details of engineering works for that weekend.

As mentioned, an alternative is to travel via Sheffield (and the beautiful Hope Valley Line on the way to Manchester), but the advantage of train over plane starts to lessen when you start going round the houses.
