The seat your wife purchased, as already pointed out, is not approved for a 17 pound six month old. It's just not safe.

Common complaints about the Britax is always how heavy they are. Did you purchase a seat for your child? If not, maybe this all will be a moot point.

CARES system suggested by another poster isn't appropriate for your child; the child must be one year or older and weigh between 22-44 pounds.
