London to Manchester -- air or rail -- which is faster door to door?

We're going to the UK for a brief trip at the end of Feb., flying into LHR, and out of MAN.

We have a hotel booked at the MAN airport our final night.

The Mister and I are disagreeing on whether we should fly or train up to Manchester. Mostly we're interested in how long it will take us door-to-door (we travel very light so checking bags, etc. is a non-issue).

We'll be staying in the Southwark area, and either (best I can tell) take a train from Euston up to Manchester, changing lines once to get to the Airport stop, or fly from one of the London airports up.

We would want to leave London sometime early afternoon, which basically means we wouldn't take the one flight I could find out of London City airport due to the fact that it leaves at 8:30AM.

Is hubby correct that, end to end, taking the train would be faster than getting to either LHR or LGW and flying up? Or, is there another later flight up to MAN that I'm not finding? We'll be traveling on a Saturday if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any wisdom.
