I did that with a London trip I had booked for April of this year when my dad was hospitalized, and rebooked it to December just last month (40K award that had to fall in the off peak period). The ticket was basically in limbo in the interim (you don't need to pick new dates when you call). I'm on the way home from it now. No extra fees or charges, and quite easy to take care of on the phone.
