Does a car seat have to be FAA approved?

http://www.amazon.com/Eddie-Bauer-Po...pr_product_top

My wife bought this car seat (ignore the price) to use for our 8 month old son from JFK-AUA on Jetblue. I noticed that this car seat is not FAA approved. Does this matter? Will the flight attendants check to see if it is?

If they dont allow this what is the lightest car seat to take on a plane that is FAA approved??

Thanks
