We actually did look at Whiteface but were scared off by comments that it is only an advanced skiers' mountain without much intermediate skiing. We are all intermediate skiers that ski the blue cruisers, so that didn't sound like a good fit for us. Otherwise, we were getting pretty excited about the place. Nearby lodging seemed reasonable priced (except that one fancy resort place that looked very nice but not cheap!).
Don't be scared off Whiteface. It's a great mountain! Whether you're a beginner, intermediate or an ace at the black double diamonds, it's a true skiers mountain. Lake Placid lodging has everything from B&Bs, a Courtyard by Marriott, small inns, condos for rent, and a luxury resort or two.
The history of Lake Placid with the Olympics of 1932 and 1980 make it a great place for the whole family. Lots to do at night and for those days when you don't want to ski. Snow shoeing, for example, around the Ausable River is outstanding.
