You can always do a fake reservation on the earlier flight and check the seat map to see how full the flight is. Of course, that's only an estimate since the last few rows are reserved at the airport and some passengers may not even have an assigned seat. You can always call UA the night before to ask them how full the earlier flight is. And check-in early at the airport, as other FTs have pointed out. Good luck.
