I here you. I was playing with an Omnia in Dubai and liked the phone. I hope I am wrong on the 3g stuff, but I don't think so. With Verizon's exclusive deal for the US Omnia, Samsung wouldn't have a ton of incentive to do a US 3g version. They do, however, put out a very similar phone for the US market called the Eternity:

EDGE wireless access isn't bad and is actually getting better. The platform is not dead. Nokia has recently offered carrier upgrades to upgrade their EDGE speed and EDGE 2.0 will be 1.5down/.5 up which will work for many applications.
I just used a US 3g model of the Nokia E71 on a four week Asian tour. I have an older Euro 3g version of the E61 in my dresser and an unlocked Tytn I. I thought about it hard and decided to take my E71 and use. It was fine, but I was mostly using as an Email device. I am not sure, however, that I would have made the choice in the other direction.
When I lived in Dubai, I really enjoyed by E61. When I moved back to the states, the EDGE seemed pokey and I got a Tytn. When the E71 came out for the US, I jumped to it, but cussed Nokia for not offering a quadband 3g phone e.g. (HSPA 850/900/1900/2100mhz).
