One of my first flights was international via EWR (it was my first or second rt, it's been so many flights since that i honestly don't remember).

I got to spend 4 hours on the tarmac, waiting in a ground hold and backup, having to get out of line to refuel, before then begining the hours across the Atlantic!

When we refueled they even gave people the option of getting off but i don't recall there being any takers.

Anywho.. on the way back I got to spend lots of time in EWR on the layover. It's not terribly hard to navigate - there are far worse airports i've encountered. Just figure out where the flights she'll be on usually fly into/out of at EWR.

Have a good look at some of the airport maps, then she'll have a rough idea of how to navigate. Train her that Step 1 after getting off the plane is to look for a connections or arrivals/departures board, then to head where it says her next flight will be.

Step 2, if it's a long walk, is to check pretty much every board she passes to see if the information changes. Nothing is worse then transfering from airside to airside to find out the flight has been repositioned back to the original airside. Most people i've seen "get lost" at an airport simply went to the place they were told and sat down and then proceeded not to check for updates. While sitting and being comfortable is fine, you've just got to check the boards with some frequency - especially if the designated gate for your flight isn't active for your flight yet.

I've had it happen when i arrive for a longer connection at gate A2 that Flight 333 to BFE is currently at that gate and my flight leaves in an hour or so. During the boarding and such for BFE, my flight gate changes to F72, the BFE gate crew doesn't notice or realize it, and so the gate doesn't announce it or post any changes. Being studious, I check and realize the gate has changed - but when i'm boarding down at F72 there are always people running breathlessly who found out A2 was the wrong spot with only 5mins to departure.
