It's still really cold. No need to exaggerate at that point.
Truth be known, I went by the numbers shown in the local newspaper the next day. Temperatures vary quite a bit in the Fairbanks area, depending upon where they're recorded. When the air is really cold, some of the lower pockets or hollows around town can be substantially colder than an area just half a mile away but 10-40 feet higher. At that time I lived in just such a hollow off the south east end of Gold Hill Rd.

I went down to the News Miner offices a couple of days after I returned to buy a few copies of the newspaper from the day before so I could cut out the 5 day forecast and send it to friends down south. The Lows showed in the -60F range for five straight days in late January, though 1.) The projected lows doesn't necessarily mean the temperatures actually got that low and 2.) the temperature at FAI (airport) may well have been a bit warmer given its slightly higher elevation.
