Having been both Gold and Silver on US the major difference I found was lounge access and additional free baggage flying international on *A carriers. This is a very nice benefit but I wouldn't spend the money for only one international trip a year.
The other differences are you have a higher priority on standby and upgrade lists if you are gold instead of silver which can be a life saver if an elite heavy flight gets cancelled.
