I don't think this is accurate...
The AA agent can enter an "oncarriage" into their system before the check in transaction occurs. Then, when the agent tries to check in the customer, it will send a message to BA "looking" for that passenger on that flight. If BA has that passenger then it will return a seat number to AA. BA will also be informed of the bag tag numbers.
Once someone has checked in for one of the sectors, (i.e. OLCI) then it's no longer possible for the other carrier's system to create a link to the other system to do anything.
