But how is it different than saying flying BA accrues AA miles except between US and UK? It is not luck or an exception, it is the way it works and within rules.

I did not know about the match until after I completed my challenge. So its worth a mention when someone asks to go check with their travel department, especially now since there is a fee for the challenge.
