I just renewed my Gold status for the sake of having the ability to use the lounges! In over 4 years of this status, I have had only 2 upgrades from Y to J and therefore lounge access was the only reason I maintained my Gold status. I have been tempted many a times to fly Qatar or Etihad, but have stayed loyal to Emirates even though it would be more convinent for me to fly with Qatar. Well I guess, I will not be so eager to fly Emirates if I keep losing my perks with them every few months!
