As noted, you can upgrade to F if A inventory is available. It requires either a VIP upgrade or 15,000 miles per person each way. In my experience, AA is stingy with A inventory on this route, but you can put your name on a waitlist, which often (but not always) will clear. The J seats are decent (not great, but decent) on this route. The F seats are better, but still not up to international long-haul standards.
I've taken the redeye more times than I care to count. I'm a good sleeper, so I can force myself to sleep on it. The problem is that it's hard to get much more than four hours of sleep because it's a relatively short flight. If you are a good sleeper and can function on four hours, go for it; otherwise I'd recommend against it.
