Ah indeed big difference. In fact the real game is to book an international return connection with < 1hr in say EWR from LHR, then cancel just in time and rebook the later flight when you realize it is hopeless to make. That works. Failing to turn the trick in time and you need to book the one way with no credit for the paid miss. Yup, done it both ways...
