Air Canada chief executive officer Montie Brewer, vowing that his airline will survive the recession, has unveiled plans to tackle the holiday rush by adding seat capacity on major routes, revamping baggage handling and even temporarily storing heavy tools for oil patch workers.

“It is a bit of a shock to realize that we are in the final month of 2008, a year that has presented some incredible challenges to our industry,” Mr. Brewer said in an internal message Monday to employees. “We adapted to the unprecedented runup – and equally stunning collapse – of oil prices, and we have prepared ourselves to manage through the difficult economic times that lie ahead.”
