For departure on 1L/1R (most narrowbody aircraft) sit on the left and you'll see the city. For departure on 28L/28R (long-range wide-bodies), sit on the right to see the city.

When flying from the north (most of the flights from Europe and from Asia) you'll do a turn over the city and downtown should be visible from the left.
