Agreed -- I have always been able to clear the SWU in the manner described. Once I was actually cleared while on the plane. I was told that F was full but they would keep me in mind if anything changed. I went and sat in my seat in business class and just before the doors closed, the flight manager came over and told me that a seat had opened up in First. Best of all, I didnt even have to surrender my SWU.
