Redeeming your own miles for a trip? Yeah, that's madness! I have splashed miles in the past on UA to upgrade. It used to be very 'cheap'. 10k each way to the US. Never cashed in my own miles to 'buy' the ticket.

Wouldn't do so either. But hey, they're your miles!
