That could be of real value. If you don't think you'd get silver next year, then 500 EUR is effectively buying you a whole extra year of status, i.e. 2010 as silver as well as 2009 as gold.
Also, if you're based at an outstation, the "open doors" policy for Golds is great (i.e. can use the BA lounge even when not flying BA).
