Perhaps true as far as quantity of merchants go, but at least in the US, for most people, the vast majority of spending opportunities by dollar accept Amex these days. Since you really need to have a Visa/MasterCard card anyway as a secondary/backup card (which would be true even if your primary was also a Visa or MasterCard), this is just not an issue for most people these days, unlike the situation 15 years ago.
