When I go to India, I worry about the outbound more than the inbound. The scheduled times don't tell you what will happen if the flight is late, and flights can be late. There are always multiple transatlantic options (on the return), but LHR-MAA is, what, four times a week? If you miss that flight, there may be no good options the same day, and potentially no nonstop the next day either. So I tend to allow more connection time on the outbound than on the return, when there is a choice of flights.
