It is not opening the credit cards that can hurt the rating, it is the constant opening and closing of them (not to mention the hassle). If you sign up for a card to get 5k miles and pay a fee of $50, will you pay that fee to keep the card a second year, when you already are paying a fee on another card? You can only put the transations on one card.
