i was 2nd or 3rd on the "confirmed-wait for seat assignment" at the gate. i did have a printout of the confirmation and the gate agent refused to do anything about it.

yes definitly call the 1k desk, also did you accept/decline the CR-1? I know it's not right (thank .bomb) but I would guess that this all hapened becasue you did not have a seat assignment. Im my past ecperiences when an upgrade cleares before check in is available the computer will assign me a seat unless they are not available ie potential for a new config plane.
My other thought is if this ever hapened again, to call the 1k desk for a seat assignment as soon as the UG clears.
