Well, you definitely got treated poorly and it's definitely worth complaining about. Getting a CR-1 as compensation would seem to be decent, except for the aggravation, discomfort and broken promise involved. See if you can get more from UA. Unless you get a very good CSR, ask to speak to a supervisor and remain calm but firm in talking to them. And of course get their name(s) and office location if they promise you something.

The one thing about your situation that I wonder about is the failure of UA to assign you a seat when your upgrade was confirmed. If I recall correctly--and I'm not sure that I do--UA generally assigns seats automatically in a situation like this. But maybe I have it wrong or the practice isn't as general as I'm assuming.
