Yep, there are indeed two A320 configurations out there right now. They are moving to the one you preferred more -- with decent room for Row 1 passengers.
The difference is made up at Row 6, the first row of E+. The acres of room are there on the aircraft with less room in Row 1 -- so they've made those seats less favorable in the new configuration (but still not horrible).
Since there's no change in the seatmaps, it's not possible to know which type of A320 you're going to fly on until you're on it.
