That only works if your travels are predominantly domestic (domestic = within any one county, not neccessarily the US). As soon as you roam with a data card outside your home network, the cellular charges could easily exceed your hotel bill total!
Actually my Aircard turns into a paperweight outside the US, so I have to pony up for WiFi. I *think* my Samsung SPH-i325 can be used as phone-as-modem in other countries, but if the cost per kb for receiving email on the phone is any indication, it would be very expensive.
