I've tentatively raised this before as an addition to someone else's thread -- but received more information today which may or may not be accurate.
I bought a 'T' WT+ ticket, and MFU'd to CW a couple of hours later (one-way). I was charged GBP60 for this change -- initially -- I thought that this was the difference in "fuel surcharge". However, that was only GBP10, the rest was the change fee associated with the ticket.
I queried this with
BA Executive Club (Nicci) who confirmed that it was appropriate that I was charged a change fee for this MFU, contrary to what most people have said on this board, including the venerable
G-BOAC, and my own prior experience. Rather too busy to do anything about it, I let it go for a while. But today, I was on the phone to the BAEC (US) for something else, and then asked about this issue once more. The CSR said that this change in policy came in a few months ago: all MFU's should now be charged the change fee, unless the person is a GCH.
I suppose if one 'books and upgrade' all in one go, this may not apply, since it is not strictly a change to the ticket, but it makes the prior practice of waiting for CW award availability to open up just prior to a trip previously booked a much less favourable strategy.
