I also stayed at the Monasterio when I was there (albiet 5 years ago) and it was beautiful. And very well located near the main square. A friend stayed there recently and was equally impressed- also mentioned that they had installed "oxygen enhancement" systems in most rooms- which is a huge advantage at that altitude (I wish they had that when i was there- I was sooo sick from the altitude).
Stayed at the Sofitel ( which was about half the price of El Monasterio) in February 2008. Found it a very nice hotel about the same distance from the square and they too had the oxygen systems.
However the " coca tea" we were offered on arrival was all we needed.
