i had almost the exact same issue last fall, and that's how i resolved it.
the main thing to be aware of is that even though you can call delta (after booking! avoid the $20 surcharge) to "link" the tickets, be on the watch for unexplained seat changes. my 3-yr-old got bounced around the cabin and no one i spoke to in india (i was not medallion yet) could do anything for me. i was fortunate to be able to snag adjacent seats 12 hours or so before the flight.
