Help! Ren Toronto Downtown Employing Shady Practices

I made a reservation back in April for a 2-night stay beginning on December 6, 2008.

It was not a special rate and could be canceled at any time before December 6, 2008 without penalty. A screen shot from my email confirmation:

The Buffalo Bills are playing the Miami Dolphins on December 7, and I wanted a stadium view room for the game.

I checked my account online last week and nothing had been altered, however, after checking my account today, they added the following to the reservation:

* You may cancel your reservation for no charge until October 29, 2008.

* Please note that we will assess a fee of 1,444.14 CAD if you must cancel after this deadline.
This was added between last week and today.

I contacted customer care via email, and received a response stating:

We researched your reservation and have determined it was booked online via Marriott.com. The rate, which was selected at the time of booking, was a special advance purchase rate. This is a discounted rate with special terms and conditions, including a requirement to make payment in full, including tax, at the time of booking.
This is a lie.

What can I do now? I would like the reservation to have the original terms that I had agreed to.

How can something like this be allowed? I believe the hotel is doing this because they know the turn-out for the game will be lower than expected and many will be canceling their reservations.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
