Don't see the point of this strategy. It's 40K miles for biz class for YVR-YYZ-YVR and YVR-MIA-YVR. So why not book yourself all the way to MIA? You will get your biz seat for the long segments. I would just take a chance at getting the upgrade at the airport for YYZ-MIA. If you don't get it, just suck it up and curse Aeroplan. What time of year are you going? Might have better luck in January than during March break.

Actually, I flew YYZ-TPA in March last year and booked Economy tickets with AP. We got complimentary upgrades to biz class because I'm SE and economy was full. However, if there was someone on an AP ticket like yours, I'm sure you would have trumped me.
