I like your idea. I would have done exactly the same that you mentioned here. If the OP was taking away 5 or 6 bottles of Water (I have seen people doing that) from the CL, then I can understand the attendant saying something. But, the OP was taking his breakfast back to his room and there should not be any issue with that.
