I stayed at Marriott San Diego La Jolla last week. At CL lounge I was asked in the morning and in the evening (different staff) if I want to take couple of bottles of water with me.

I sometimes take breakfast to my room or evening snacks as well so I can work while eating. Never had any issues with it.

At Marriott Prague I always got a tray to take breakfast to my wife and daughters in the room as they would sleep in and otherwise miss the breakfast.

Behavior you've described just seems weird (from CL staff).
