My first long business trip... freezing in my hotel room.
Hello there.
I am on my first long term business trip, 2 months to be specific. I work at a (took country name out) contruction company which just bought a €40m plant in Ankara, Turkey. I was assigned this duty over a month ago and will start tomorrow morning. Anyways, to get to the point, the hotel I was booked a reservation in is painful. Upon arrival, I first noticed its a very old hotel that is renovating its rooms. They are finished with top 2 floors and continue renovating the first 3 floors during the day when most people are outside the hotel. I am on 5th floor.
1. I feel like I am the only person staying in this hotel. It's a 3 star hotel, so I wasn't expecting anything great but the elevator is the kind that you don't want to get in. It is so old and was so shaky I thought of carrying my luggage all 5 stories by the stairs.
2. Upon entering any hotel room, the bathroom is the first thing I check. And guess what I found in the bathroom: a used towel on the floor with lipstick marks on it. Somebody must have just wiped their lipstick with it and left it there.
3. A dirty ashtray on a coffeetable. There was a lit match in it.
4. I cannot get the damn HVAC working. The controlling unit is by LG so its nothing that I am not used to but it starts blowing heat and stops after 2 minutes. I made sure it wasn't the timer. I called reception and a guy came by to take a look at it and even he couldn't figure it out. And since I had already unpacked my stuff, I don't want to move to another room. I guess I am gonna freeze tonight and hope somebody can fix this in the morning.
Now on to other things. I am an analyst, just 25 years old, and I do realize I am not a manager or a director but there are 3 other Spaniards in Ankara, all 3 of them managers, and 4 Germans with us, all managers as well as far as I know. They are staying in a nicer hotel, called (took hotel name out) Hotel and I have been there before for leisure, it's at least 2x better than the hotel they booked for me if not more. If this was some charity I am in, I wouldn't mind but is this really normal for corporate culture? This is my 2nd job after college and I didn't travel much for business before. I just think it is not nice to book me in this rathole when they are staying in a nicer hotel just 50m from me.
I am thinking of calling my manager in (country) tomorrow and talking to him about it. What do you recommend? I am going to stay in this room for 2 months and I don't want it to be miserable. Am I just spoiled or something or do you agree?
Thanks Flyertalk :S
