UA does reserve overhead space.. In F and C. When I am on F and C i always board last as I dont like sitting in my seat and not moving.

As for reserving space in Y, NO WAY

I would however pay $10 to get my bag as soon as I get off the plane, have them run the bag up to the jetway.

$10 is well worth 30 of time saved.
