Anyone been through these unfortunate circumstances? How were you treated and what was the outcome?

You must report it to Amex ASAP and they will freeze your account and issue you a new card with a different number. As sbm12 said, you are only liable for $50 if a loss was reported in a timely manner and it was a personal card. However, more likely Amex will not even require you to pay $50.
