I was thinking why they didn't do SFO-TPE-HKG or SFO-TPE-MNL since the flight arrived TPE around 6 pm.
TPE-Shanghai or TPE-PEK nonstop direct routes (without flying over HKG airspace) just got approved by China and Taiwan govts, so it's up to carriers to apply. Traffic on these nonstop routes is expected to be huge. It would be convenient if UA can get rights (via open sky negotiation) to fly TPE-PEK or TPE-PVG. Then it would be easy to justify resuming nonstop SFO-TPE again.
