I'm not sure its radically lower cost for CX... because MNL is so close to HK much of the metal they use for MNL is being used in between overnight long-haul in and out of HK... for example the 744 CX flt to Manila... that 744 would effectively be idle if not whized over to MNL in the morning and back. Putting KA aicraft on during the day (when KA is generally tied up), would be a 'real' incremental use of metal that could otherwise be deployed... ie, a real opportunity cost consideration.
That is good information, OzChuckles. I have often wondered why they were flying the big birds on such a route, but if it is using an otherwise idle 744, that makes good sense.
